Foundations and Grant Makers

The Summer Fund works with foundations, corporations, and other leading grant makers committed to supporting summer programming for underserved youth in Greater Boston. As the oldest donor collaborative in New England, the Summer Fund has built a reputation of excellence in providing the expertise, value, and due diligence that donors rely on to better manage the high-volume of annual funding appeals received from summer programs.

Our donors contribute $1.06 million annually to support our efforts. Click here for a list of our corporate and foundation donors.

The Summer Fund provides donors with an exceptional funding approach that leverages grant dollars, evaluates quality camps, assesses community needs, and determines how best to support campers with diverse needs.  Our collaborative network, staff expertise, and extensive data collection enable us to more effectively support the summer program field than a single foundation or donor could do working on their own.

Summer Fund donors receive the following benefits:

  • A coordinated approach to funding summer programs that provides for equitable and strategic allocation of resources to meet community needs
  • Quality assurance and accountability based on a thorough review process evaluating camps’ financial, programmatic, and demographic information to ensure that funding is directed toward high-quality camps
  • Leveraged grant dollars that provide direct operational support to camps, and facilitates capacity building initiatives that strengthen the field as a whole
  • Choice and flexibility, enabling donors to contribute to the General Fund, the Homeless Campership Fund, the Cultural Day Initiative and other special initiatives, and/or to a specific camp
  • Access to unsurpassed expertise we are the only entity focused on  providing resources and support for summer programs serving low-income and underserved youth in Greater Boston
  • Opportunities for collaboration and learning for donors and grant makers who want to participate in site visits and/or get more involved with the Summer Fund

Summer Fund Fact

In 2017, the Summer Fund allocated $980,000 to support over 20,000 disadvantaged and at-risk youth, youth in homeless shelters, and those facing housing insecurities to take part in summer camping, access to cultural and arts activities, and job opportunities for the summer.

Our Impact

The Summer Fund provides 60% of the total number of groups we serve for our summer programs, which yields 35% of our total participants and 40% of our participant fees. The impact of the Summer Fund on YES’s Outdoor Adventure Program is substantial. It provides the opportunity for more than 250 participants to receive introductory, one-day outdoor experiential education excursions, which we hope will leave them yearning to come back for more.

Cultural Day has had a significant impact on MetroLacrosse’s ability to implement quality summer programming. This summer, our Coaches-In-Training program implemented lacrosse clinics for 32 community organizations, 23 of which were secured through the Summer Fund. Cultural Day gives us the opportunity to efficiently and cost-effectively secure partnerships with past partners as well as new organizations we haven’t worked with before.
