Summer Fund Update
It’s been a busy, successful summer for the Associated Grant Makers Summer Fund, and we wanted to give you an update on some of the highlights. The most important highlight, of course, has been the active, engaged, happy, and safe children and youth who have been served by the Summer Fund thanks to all the Summer Fund donors’ generosity. Many of the camps we have visited this summer have reiterated how important the Summer Fund support is, and how our grants and programs such as Cultural Day really make their camps possible. Our thanks to this year’s donors, and our invitation to those who are not yet donors to join us!
Summer Fund recognized by Phillips Brooks House
On August 1, the Summer Fund was honored as one of the 2007 Community Builders by the Phillips Brooks House Association Summer Urban Program (PBHA). In a ceremony at Stony Brook Park in Jamaica Plain, PBHA presented Dayna Antenucci, the Summer Fund Manager with an engraved plaque and thanked the Summer Fund for its long-running support of the Summer Urban program and the camps that it runs throughout Boston and Cambridge. The ceremony included performances by each of the SUP camps including some phenomenal dancing. The other honorees were Action for Boston Community Development (ABCD) and the Boston Centers for Youth and Family. The event at which more than 800 campers and their family members participated was organized by the teen junior counselors.
Summer Fund partners with the New England Revolution for a Night Out
Through the generosity and partnership of the New England Revolution Charitable Foundation, the Summer Fund was able to obtain nearly 600 tickets for Summer Fund Campers to attend the August 2, Kids Night Out. Campers in attendance got to see the Revolution defeat the Kansas City Wizards by a score of 2-0, and a good time was had by all. One of the attending camp directors wrote after: "Just wanted to let you know that our kids had a blast at the soccer game! It was a great opportunity!"
Site Visits demonstrate quality of and need for summer programs
The Summer Fund Manager and donor representatives have completed over 25 site visits to a wide range of the Summer Fund camps this summer. Throughout the diverse portfolio of camps visited, we have seen how the different types of programs we support are both needed and used by kids throughout Boston, Cambridge, Chelsea and Somerville. From arts programs to athletics to academics, children at Summer Fund camps are learning, active and engaging in recreational activities in safe, supervised spaces. Kids come in all shapes and sizes and with many needs. Our site visits show how well we are able to meet that range of needs, and we are grateful to all the donors who make that happen.
